This position provides general Quality Assurance support for the company in all relevant areas.  Specifically, this position will assist the Quality Assurance team in providing quality management support at all production facilities and co-packers, as well as assisting other relevant areas such as regulatory and inspection.

 Responsibilities:

     Conduct detailed examination of raw materials, ingredients, packaging, and finished goods, and maintain records of examinations.

     Ensure specification compliance with Gorton’s and government regulations.

     Participate on Quality Audit teams to ensure compliance for Food Safety, Quality, and GMP’s at internal, co-packer, and supplier facilities.

     Assist with specification management, product hold resolution, consumer complaint investigation, GFSI compliance, traceability programs, and other quality systems, as required.

Qualifications:

     BS in a scientific field,   preferably in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or Biology.  HACCP certification a plus.

     Solid quantitative skills, with aptitude for technology and science.

     Comfortable in manufacturing environment with mechanical aptitude.

     Accuracy in work and ability to perform accurate record keeping.

     Ability to communicate well, both orally and written.

     Ability to take direction and work independently with minimum supervision.

     Flexibility in schedule and available for limited travel (25%).

 Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

•Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (Food Science, Chemical Engineering).

•3 to 10 years of direct sales or technical sales experience with focus in the food and beverage industry.

•Proven track record managing and penetrating accounts at multiple touch points and delivering results; preferably in the food industry.

•Demonstrated ability to organize a sales operating strategy which permits the identification of business opportunities and variables effecting the customer and market.

•Willing to travel up to 50% of the time

•Knowledgeable in financial dealings with customer accounts.

•Motivated, self-starting professional with excellent communication skills both written and oral. Skilled at preparing and delivering both technical and business presentations.

Under direction of the President, the Quality Assurance Manager directs and manages all aspects of Vermont Creamery’s Quality Assurance and Safety Program.  Primary duties include managing the company’s third party BRC certification, implementing the HACCP plan, training employees in Good Manufacturing Practices, conducting audits, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Other duties include managing outside contractors, and responding to and resolving customer complaints. The Quality Assurance Manager is also in charge of all safety aspects including OSHA requirements, and assists in Research & Development projects in collaboration with the Creamery Manager.

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties as assigned):

  Assurance Quality Program

     Responsible for successfully managing company BRC certification process.

     Establish Continuous Improvement plan and annual goals for the Quality Assurance program to assure product quality, yield gain, efficiency and customer satisfaction.

     Develop tools to report on KPIs, edit trend analysis, and drive continuous process and quality improvements.

     Report to production and Creamery Manager on QA issues, daily disposition and resolutions.

     Coordinates company HACCP program implementation, training, recording and all related issues.

     Responsible to report food safety, quality and regulatory compliance to plant and management team with authority to initiate actions.

     Organizes and conduct internal audits, and works with outside auditing company.

     Organizes and oversees all internal product testing from raw material, packaging, ingredients, product in transit to finished product and sensory evaluation.

     Organizes and manages all outside testing such as Listeria test, milk test, and iodine values.

     Responsible for keeping all packaging and records in compliance with all regulations.

     Manages customers’ complaints, follow-ups, corrective actions, staff training, and credit approvals.

     Work with sales and management on fulfilling customer QA requirements.

     Ensure quality documents and reports are completed and collected regularly.

     Coordinate new plant start-up and product line extension validation process and documentation.

  Training

     Organize and train new employees on company QA program, Good Manufacturing Practices, food safety, and chemical usage.

     Keeps Good Manufacturing Practices up-to-date and conduct annual training, and informs staff when new procedures are put in place.

     When incidents occur, revise or create new procedures and train staff as part of corrective action measures.

     Organizes safety training such as chemical usage, and all aspects of work place safety.

  Safety

     Responsible for company compliance with all regulatory requirements.

     Designs and manages company Safety Manual.

     Assures audits from inspection agencies.

  Research & Development

     Assists Management team in R&D trials and protocols.

     Follows product testing and edits reports.

     Searches for new ingredients, new packaging as needed.

     Tests product prior to launch: shelf life testing, sensory profile elaboration, and cooking applications.

     Responsible for supporting new product, new materials, and new supplier qualifications.

  EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Four-year degree and minimum of two years of quality experience in food manufacturing setting applying a comprehensive, hands-on knowledge of statistical process control, design of experiments, root cause analysis, TQM, Six Sigma, etc.

  Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and database programs. Must be able to perform mathematical calculation and analysis. Ability to conduct and interpret lab analysis. Must be comfortable and effective problem solving in a fast-paced growing dynamic organization. Must be organized, innovative, intensely focused and detail oriented. Must have excellent communication skills, get along with others, work under deadline and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

 Technical skills: Management and training experience, experience with HACCP, BRC or equivalent Food Safety standards, excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This is a full-time position which will be located in the Department of Food Science and will work as a member of the team supporting the Industry Partnership Program of the Cornell Institute for Food Systems (ipp.cifs.cornell.edu/). A key responsibility of this position will be to help create the Action Plan, provide implementation of the Action Plan for assigned industry members in CIFS-IPP, including plan development, alignment of Institute expertise and resources, and, as often as possible, technical support and assistance through problem-solving solutions. In this way, the position will support stewardship of strategic relations with industry members. The goal for this position is to ensure satisfaction and retention of current program members and to continue to develop mutually-beneficial program components for the university Faculty Fellows and the industry members. The ideal candidate would have appropriate expertise in Food Science or a closely-related discipline to provide program members with completion of selected plan priorities. In addition, the ideal candidate would have expertise that will allow expansion and long term sustainability of this program by introducing new food system services and seeking other funding opportunities. The candidate is expected to analyze and evaluate major program efforts and make recommendations for program enhancements. Finally, the candidate will actively contribute to economic development activities focused in New York State. This is a one-year term appointment with possibility of extension, dependent on funding and performance.

     Conduct inside swabbing of the production rooms.

     Assist with outside testing such as Listeria test, milk test and iodine values.

     Monitor ingredients usage to ensure adherence to FIFO and proper recording of balances and lots.

     Monitor boxing area change-overs to ensure proper materials (tape, labels, boxes) are used.

     Monitor code dates printed on product and boxes/barcodes for accuracy.

     Communicate well with Team Leaders and Supervisors to ensure that when this employee switches from QA to Lean Manufacturing during the day, no gaps occur in the vigilant monitoring of aforementioned areas.

     Follow all procedures and GMP’s, along with company Safety & Quality Plan and enforce them.
